The Maroon Commandos is a popular military musical group from Kenya that performs benga, rumba and other styles of music. Formed in 1970 by bandleader Habel Kifoto and other members, the group belongs to the 7th Kenya Rifles Battalion of the Kenya Army and is based at the Langata Barracks in Nairobi. The band has released several hit albums over the years, including “Riziki Haivutwi” (1977 or later), “Dawa Nimuone Hani” (1983), “Pesa Maradhi Ya Moyo” (with Daudi Kabaka) (1986), “Hasira ni Hasara” (1986), “Bila Jasho “Mwakaribishwa na Maroon”” (1989), “Bonya Kuché” (1990), “Shikamoo” (1991), and their latest album “Shika Kamba” released in 2007. Some of their most popular songs include “Emily” (1971), “Charonyi ni Wasi” (1977), which became their first major hit, and “Ni Wapo”. The band has had several lineup changes over the years, with former bandleader Habel Kifoto retiring from the military in 2009 and serving as the chairman of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya until he died in 2011.
